Rowing at Orange Coast College

Orange Coast College, located in Costa Mesa California was founded in 1947. Orange College is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

OCC is one of the nations largest community colleges, it enrolles over twenty five thousand students each semester. OCC sits on a 164 acre campus that is located near the Southern California beaches and harbours. About half of the students enrolled at OCC are in career and technical programs.

Orange College offers students more then one hundred and thirty five career and academic programs to choose from. Orange Coast College comes in first place ranking in orange county for the number of students they are able to transfer on to further their education at universities.

The David A. Grant Collegiate Rowing Center is the Orange Cosat College Boat House. It proudly displays all winning banners and team pictures on its walls. The boat house also houses neatly stacked and well cared for boats that the rowers use. Some boats cost up to $55,000.00.

Orange Coast College is known for having one of the largest and well known public nautical programs in the United States.

This community college has obtained more then eleven national titles in rowing since it was established. Orange Coast College has seen ten of its rowers move on to compete in the Olympics and world championships.

Steve Morris is the mens assistant rowing coach at Orange Coast College. Steve was on a rowing team during his college years. He was the coxswain of his rowing team.

Coxwains are the members of the rowing team who sit at the rear of the boat and yell commands to the rowers. Rowing is an elite sport where all rowers must work as one in synchronized movements to obtain maximum speed of their boats.

Pracitces for the OCC rowing team start promptly at 6:30 in the morning at Newport Harbor from August through May.
