Tony Petrello is a math whiz, talented CEO and a committed philanthropist. He’s currently oil and gas juggernaut Nabors Industries’ chairman, president and CEO. Petrello was hired by Nabors Industries in 1991. At the time he was managing partner at the Manhattan office of the internationally known and respected law firm Baker & McKenzie. Petrello had worked with the firm since graduating from Harvard law school in 1986. He was a rising star in the legal field. It was a career choice few had anticipated Tony Petrello making. After all, he had been a math whiz in high school.
The quality of life Tony Petrollo enjoys as the head of the Texas-based oil and gas giant is very different than he experienced in the working-class Newark, New Jersey neighborhood in which he was raised. But his hard work and talent for math enabled him to get a full scholarship to Yale. There he studied under famed mathematician Serge Lang. After earning his bachelor’s and master’s in math, he made the fateful decision to attend Harvard Law School. It would lead to his being hired by Nabors Industries. In 2015 the company made him America’s highest paid CEO with a salary of $68.2 million.
Tony Petrello became deeply involved in philanthropy when his daughter Carena was born prematurely and diagnosed with cerebral palsy. To help her get the quality care she would need, Petrello gave Texas Children’s Hospital $7 million as seed money for them to build a neurological research center.
