George Soros has been the subject of a lot of negative press lately. That’s nothing new–Soros, the Hungarian-born philanthropist has long attracted hatred from the right wing for his support of liberal causes, which include reforms to United States drug policies. Recently, however, the hate and vitriol have ramped up to previously unseen levels in the wake of the George Soros Wikileaks email dump.
Attacks from Anti-Semites
Especially alarming is the amount of hate from the anti-Semitic elements of the right wing, who seem to think there’s some sort of George Soros conspiracy. Some of these wing nuts have tweeted that Soros is part of a Jewish conspiracy whose mission it is to undermine the “white race.”
Anti-Semites have played a bizarre connect-the-dots game to support their idea that there is a George Soros conspiracy to change the racial make-up of Europe by allowing refugees to emigrate to safer countries. While it’s true that George Soros supports the rights of migrant and refugees, he’s got a good reason: as a young man, he survived the German occupation of Hungary during World War II. He’s been an vocal supporter for refugee rights ever since.
Attacks from Russia
It’s thought that the George Soros emails leak is the work of Russian agents, who have long been opposed to the causes that Soros supports, including, but not limited to prison reform, and rights for transgender individuals.
Russia constantly tries to paint itself as a supporter of the Palestinian people, but these leaks are attracting attention not only from anti-Semites and neo-Nazis, but also from right-wing proponents of Israel. Groups with this mentality often say that there is a George Soros conspiracy to “delegitimize” Israel.
Attacks from Right-Wing Pundits
Right-wing US media has also attacked Soros for many perceived threats, long before the George Soros Wikileaks “scandal.” Pundits like Glenn Beck blame Soros for the so-called scourge of progressivism; right-wing new outlet Breitbart held him directly responsible for the “refugee crisis” in Europe.
Is it possible to dissuade these conspiracy theorists? Maybe not, but the public should be aware that that’s just what these anti-Semitic attacks on Soros are: conspiracies. The fact is that George Soros is an extremely wealthy man who contributes to innumerable progressive causes and charities. He’s also made some pointed comments about Israeli leadership over the years, which is tantamount to treason among certain right-wing groups that have system devalued the idea of critical thought over the years.
The Silver Lining
If there’s a silver lining to the cloud that has surrounded Soros of late, it’s that a man who grew up fearing for his life because of his faith was able to rise to such a position that he can be the target of attacks from everybody from the Russian government, to the United States’ most powerful right-wing groups and pundits.
